Living plants in the Earth's biosphere capture the energy of sunlight and turn this into sugars. This is the basis of all the world's food production.

Animals live in niches in the environment provided by the biosphere and these eat the plants or each other to obtain their food.

Man however has learned how to modify the biosphere to his advantage (it is called farming) to produce food sources he likes. This is at the expense of the natural environment of the biosphere, which means other living things on Earth (which man does not eat) are being destroyed.
