It depends on the size of the community, the average community needs 3 to 4 inches in my area. there is a formula that starts with the number of bedrooms the community has/will have multiplyed by gal per min then divided by an X factor for practical use, usually X=2 but i have seen X=3 used, all to get to a total gal per min that the community needs. once the gal per min that the community needs is established then you can figure out the size pipe needed based on manufacturer specs for the pipe. different types of pipe have different flow rates even if they are the same size, ex. copper vs poly
