No matter how little gravity, as long as it is still positive, you would not float. For that, you would have to have less density than the air. With zero gravity, both we and the air would float away into space.

yup it does. but there are many dangers to breathing in helium repeatedly without taking breaks for oxygen. its not the helium that's dangerous; its the fact that your not breathing oxygen. its less dangerous to just be sucking it from a balloon than a, like, giant commercial balloon or something, though. when u are just using a little party balloon, the worst case scenario is that you will become oxygen deprived and pass out. If you climb in a huge commercial balloon, then you can actually pass out, not be able to climb out b/c you are unconscious, not get oxygen and die. this really happened to some college kids in florida. not good or smart. so if you are sucking helium from a little party balloon, make sure you are taking breathes of normal air in between and don't do it for more than a minute at the most! HELIUM CAN BE DANGEROUS!!!!!!!


Will helium balloon pop on airplane?

On modern airplanes no, because the cabin is pressurised to the same atmospheric pressure as on the ground. If the balloon was on the outside of the plane, and the atmospheric pressure at that altitude were low enough, then yes, the balloon would pop.

We're also going to ignore the compression of the balloon; we can assume it's mylar or something and the helium inside is at normal atmospheric pressure (if the balloon is compressing the helium, it will need to be bigger, since the density of the helium goes up as the pressure increases).At around room temperature and ordinary pressures, helium has a density of about 0.164 kilograms per cubic meter. Under the same conditions, air has a density of a little under 1.2 kilograms per cubic meter. For a ballpark estimate, therefore, we can say that a balloon with a volume of 1 cubic meter will lift roughly 1 kilogram, which makes the calculation easy: to lift a 175 lb (80 kg) person, you need an 80 cubic meter balloon, which if spherical would have a radius of 2.67 meters or a little over 8 feet 9 inches.A helium balloon 18 feet across should be sufficient to lift 175 pounds. A 30cm balloon (fairly standard party balloon) holds about 8 liters of helium at 1 atmosphere and weighs itself around 3 grams (latex) on earth. 8 Liters of Helium would weigh about 1.4 grams at 1g.
