Long before it was a national monument, native people have used the quarries within the Monument's grounds for hundreds of years, up to 3,000 years ago. The first European to see the site may have been Philander Prescott. George Catlin painted the scene at the quarries in September 1836. Joseph Nicollet's expedition reached the quarries in June and July 1838, making the first map of the area.
