Record deals are quite tricky as there is no such thing as a "typical" recording agreement. Each one is (or SHOULD) be tailor made according to the artist's situation. Point is, you might get a 3-album deal(which is quite fair) but the other terms could be completely unreasonable. On the other hand, one might get a 7-album deal(this would usually be with a Major) and yet everything else is perfect. Now who's to say which one is better? As both have impressive pros and con's.

My advice would be to get a good manager or at least consult an attorney before signing anything.
