It should only last a few hours after the surgery. If it lasts more than one day, you should call your dentist, as you may be suffering from temporary paresthesia.
Personal Experiences: I just had my four pulled. I was numb from the novacaine for a couple hours afterwards, but that also might be because he gave me another shot of it before I left so I could have time to recover some before I had to start taking my pain meds.
I had all four wisdom teeth out a week ago and the left side of my lip and chin are still numb. It's from whatever drugs I was given, and I've been told it can last a few weeks to a few months; anything longer than 6 months I should go see the oral surgeon, as it could be a damaged nerve and would require more surgery. I was told this by the dentist and surgeon, along with some research.
