If you want to do something like in-hand, halter, or showmanship you can begin showing the horse as a weanling or even a small foal in mare and foal classes so long as the young horse is trained to stand and square up correctly. As for any ridden discipline many breed associations allow two year olds to be shown but this is not good for the horses body or mind. It is typically best to wait until the horse is a long three year old or four years old before showing it in and kind of ridden classes.
After a mare has foaled you will want to wait until the foal is weaned before you ride the mare again. It is very hard to ride a mare with the foal trotting along side, and can be dangerous for the foal. A foal is ready to be weaned any time from 6 to 8 months of age.
