A great White whale isn't a defined animal.
The only ones that are regularly White are the Belugas, but they aren't very big.
White, or paler-than-average animals are sometimes born among the other species, but that's random. ANd their Life would be according to species.

If you see an animal about 5 miles from the coast that's too big to be a dolphin and too small to be a whale it could feasible be a great whale, also known as a right whale. Right whales grow to about 59 feet long, which is actually fairly large compared a dolphin which grows to be about 20 feet long. The largest whale is the blue whale which can grow to be 100 feet long. It very well could have been a great (right) whale.
