They can't live underwater as a toad, but as a tadpole they live underwater. But then they transform in many different ways. They grow legs, and lungs instead of gills. However, toads and frogs still have to stay moisterized, because they do about half of their breathing through the pores in their skin.

They can live a long time underwater, but don't need to as long as they can find cool, slightly damp hiding-places. They need to return to water for egg-laying though, and often hibernate in pool-floor mud.

I had 3 firebelly toads and me and my roomates didn't feed them for about 4 maybe 5 weeks and they were still alive, we let them go today
