Caffeine withdrawal headaches tend to occur off and on for as long as the caffeine withdrawal lasts. Usually, the most intense headaches are in the first day or so, and they quickly diminish and are mostly gone after a week. Caffeine withdrawal headaches are often strongest during the times of day in which a person was used to drinking caffeine. For example, if someone started their day off with a couple strong cups of coffee, and then stopped cold turkey, they'd be likely to experience these headaches in the morning.

Caffeine withdrawal also includes other symptoms such as trouble concentrating, diminished alertness, and depressed mood and lower motivation. These symptoms tend to be very mild and brief, however, compared to the withdrawal of addictive hard drugs like cocaine.

It can last for any amount of time.

It generally can last from a hour or two, from the first symptoms a migraine (these can be very different for different people, auras, sounds sensitivity, etc. ) to 2 to 3 days. There is often a sharp increase in pain in that usually last the first 1/3 of the episode while the last 2 thirds may have less pain but have "hung over" or foggy feeling even if no medication was taking that would cause such an effect. Also people can get a new migraine before the last migraine cycle has completed itself.

A severe headache can be caused by over-stimulation of the central nervous system by taking in caffeine too often or in too great quantity. These types of headaches can occur in most any part of head, but most often will be felt either at the base of the skull, or over or behind the eyes, or in one half of the head from front to back.

It is most important to recognize that a headache is caused by caffeine because this will automatically assist you to know that the best way to get rid of the headache is to stop taking in additional caffeine from chocolate, coffee, tea, cola drinks and many prescription and non-prescription pain medication.

Once all intake of caffeine is stopped the headache will typically begin to gradually subside within 2-3 hours.
