Up to 20 years
Many pet and wild hermit crabs can live anywhere from 20 to 30 years if kept properly. Some owners say they live longer if they have another crab to keep them company. :)
Hermit crabs get their name by being of the crab family. The hermit part is because of how they live in a shell, alone. But they are very social creatures and live in the wild in hoards. A hermit crab should never be bought alone, being alone makes them get stressed and die easily.
Wild hermit crabs eat just about anything they are scavengers

The best kind of wood to have in a hermit crab habitat is chlora wood, its a pale tan with holes and gaps in it. This resembles the driftwood hermit crabs have in the wild.

If you live in the Caribbean, and see other hermit crabs living by themselves in the wild, then PLEASE free the poor guy and return him to his natural habitat! ALL hermit crabs from pet shops were caught in the wild, it is nearly impossible for pet stores to successfully breed hermit crabs in captivity.
