Salt water fish should not be kept in fresh water. I dont how long they will survive but you shouldnt keep them in fresh water at all. If you have an emergency and you need to put them in fresh water, try to keep them in there for as short of a time as possible

Not long. In some species a few minutes in others maybe an hour or so and in others maybe a few days. It would be a terribly painfull way for the fish to die and extremely cruel of anyone to do such a thing to a fish.
