Southwest does not use miles in its Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program. It uses points. You earn 6 to 12 points for each dollar you pay for a ticket, depending on the fare class you book. (Wanna Get Away fares are the lowest, earning 6 points/$. Business Select fares are the highest, 12 points/$.) The number of miles you fly does not affect the points you earn.

Southwest points that you earn do not expire.

Cashing-in on Frequent Flyer Programs for the Non-Frequent Traveler, Part I?

In 1981, American Airlines introduced the world’s first frequent flyer program as we know them today. It was quickly copied and adapted by United and Continental, and by nearly every other airline in the years that followed. By 2005, The Economist estimated about $70 billion dollars worth of airline miles had been accrued. This is a ton of money, and it’s easy to get your slice of the pie, even if your family only flies a few times a year. Airlines have created a slew of new partnerships and alliances to allow you to earn and redeem miles easier than ever, and now is the time to pick up a few tricks from the pros.5 Lessons for Non-Frequent Flyers:1) Get a frequent flyer account now. They’re free, easy to get online, and last a lifetime. Get one for you, your spouse, and the kids. Points are earned individually.2) Make use of airline alliances. It used to be that you could only earn miles with the airline you flew. Not anymore – certain airlines “play nice” with each other and allow you to earn and redeem on partners. Choose the airline you fly most, and use it to collect all the miles you fly on partner airlines. When you fly a partner carrier, select your preferred frequent flyer program from the drop down menu when booking a ticket and enter the number. Here’s a quick cheat sheet for major North American carriers:-Star Alliance: United, US Airways, Continental, Air Canada-OneWorld Alliance: American, Mexicana, British Airways-SkyTeam: Delta, Northwest (now Delta), AeroMexicoYou’ll notice that Star Alliance has three major domestic carriers under the same banner – which is certainly worth considering if you’re looking to make the most out of your airline miles.3) Collect miles on EVERYTHING. Every flight, and every hotel stay, rental car, floral purchase, mortgage, luggage purchase, you name it – you can earn miles on it. Look under “partner offers” on an airline frequent flyer program website. You’ll be blown away at how much stuff you buy every day can net you 250 miles here and 1000 miles there. If you refinance your house, you can practically get a free flight. Anyone that says “Oh, I don’t fly enough to have a frequent flyer account” doesn’t know how to work the system. Let them pay full price while you fly for free.4) Since you’ve followed lesson one above, you have accounts for your whole family. Now, you might already know that you usually can’t bundle “family” points together. So, little Alex and Evan each have 7,000 points from their Florida vacations and you’re 5,000 miles short on your award. Airlines now allow you to transfer miles for a fee! It’s pretty hefty (so avoid it if possible), but if it’s a few thousand miles between you and a free ticket, it’s cheaper than buying the miles outright to top off your account. Keep your eyes out for bonuses on buying or transferring miles too. Up to 30% additional bonus miles with purchases or transfers have become fairly common as airlines look for more cash.5) Use your miles creatively. You don’t have to have 25,000 miles to be able to reap some benefits from them. Upgrades (which can be a big treat on a NY-LA flight) can be had for as little as 10,000 or 15,000 miles. Short-haul awards are also available on some carriers – meaning you can take a flight of less than 800 miles for reduced mileage. Sometimes short flights are really expensive, such as those to a small ski resort town or rural locale. Taking that flight to see Aunt Margaret might be more practical if you can fly right to her little farm town and bypass the big airport and car rental. Award travel is often easier to smaller airports (more empty/available seats), so save some car rental money and see if there’s a smaller airport closer to your destination.Hopefully these tips have clued you in on ways to cash in on frequent flyer points.
