Emperor Akihito is the current head of state, but like the queen of england he holds no real power. In all actuality, he and his family are paid to live in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, and make very occasional appearances for national holidays. Its a pretty sweet deal for somebody who holds little to no actual power over the country. The current Prime Minister of Japan is Junichiro Koizumi. There are also two houses of Parliament.
