Several years. On January 1, 1841 they were supposed to be married. On his wedding day, Lincoln got a bad case of nerves and left Springfield for New Orleans. In New Orleans, he met up with Jefferson Davis. Jefferson took Abraham to Madam Estell's for the night.

Abraham and Mary eventually got back together and they were married in 1843.

What is your maiden name?

A maiden name means the last name that a married woman had before changing it to her husband's last name. An example is before marrying Abraham Lincoln, his wife's name was Mary Todd (maiden name); upon marrying Mr. Lincoln, she became Mary Lincoln (married name). Today, this is usually an optional choice by someone when they marry.
