He was the younger brother of Louis XVI, who was executed during the French Revolution, and had always been jealous of his older brother. As soon as Napoleon started to loose grip on France, Provence started a coup so he could be at power. He called himself Louis XVIII. After him, his brother the Compte Artois took over and called himself Charles X. Though France was back at being a monarchy, they were only King in name and had no real political power. The official last King of France had been Louis XVI.
