A:The first New Testament gospel written was Mark's Gospel, and that account has John the Baptist imprisoned almost immediately after the baptism of Jesus (Mark 1:14) and apparently executed shortly afterwards. This is confirmed in Mark 6:14, where Herod feared that Jesus was John already come back to life. Very much the same time sequence is followed in Matthew and Luke, but John's Gospel says that the Baptist was still at liberty quite some time after (John 3:24), although he was executed long before the crucifixion of Jesus.

The historical account, by the first-century Jewish historian Josephus, suggests not only that John the Baptist's execution took place long after the traditional time of Jesus' baptism and even after the crucifixion, but also that it took place in faraway Macherus and not necessarily by beheading. Josephus confirms that the reason for John's arrest was his public criticism of Herod Antipas' marriage to his own brother's former wife. The wedding took place in 34 CE and Antipas ordered John to be executed in 35 or 36 CE, out of fear that he was stirring the Jews up for rebellion. The relevant text from Book 18 of Antiquities of the Jews:

"Now many people came in crowds to him, for they were greatly moved by his words. Herod, who feared that the great influence John had over the masses might put them into his power and enable him to raise a rebellion (for they seemed ready to do anything he should advise), thought it best to put him to death. In this way, he might prevent any mischief John might cause, and not bring himself into difficulties by sparing a man who might make him repent of it when it would be too late. Accordingly John was sent as a prisoner, out of Herod's suspicious temper, to Macherus, the castle I already mentioned, and was put to death."

The start of the mission of Jesus traditionally took place in 29 CE, so if John baptised Jesus as stated in the gospels, he must have lived for a further five or six years, preaching quite independently of Jesus, before he was arrested and executed.

Why does the baptism of Jesus cause problems for Christians today?

A:As long ago as the second century, the author of John's Gospel saw a problem in understanding Jesus as divine, yet seeking to be baptised by John the Baptist. He simply omitted the baptism of Jesus from his account of John the Baptist, although anyone familiar with the synoptic gospels would assume that Jesus was baptised. The same problem that the evangelist saw is now a problem for some Christians today.

How long does it take to make hot cross buns?

John the Baptist was baptized for the same reason all are, even today. The cleansing of his soul and the representation of rebirth into a new life. No one is above baptism, if Jesus himself was baptized (which he was) why would John the Baptist be any better to not need a baptism?

When was baptism instituted by Christ?

Are you asking for a date or just when in the bible? I believe it talks about Christ's baptism in Matthew Chapter 3.ALSOIn the last chapter of Matthew Jesus gives His disciples the "great commission". He tells them to make disciples and baptize them. This is where Jesus specifically says to baptize. Notice also that baptism is a believers baptism not the baptism of infants. A disciple is a person who has been trained/taughtMat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

When did baptisim started?

Baptism started before Jesus Christ, although for different reasons than in Christianity. In Orthodox Judaism, the bride to be has a ritualistic bath before she is to be wed. This ritual is performed with women. Water has long been believed to be cleansing values, and bathing as a form of 'baptism' - has been in many faiths in the world dating back as long as can be reckoned. (The) Romans had public baths. In Cristianity, baptism started when John the Baptist was baptizing people and then Jesus came and asked John to baptize Him, then God spoke to Jesus and told the people that His son was beloved and pleasing.... you can find this in Matthew 3:13 I hope i have helped you :)
