Until 1841
"In 1941... The residents of Vicksburg, Mississippi, celebrated the Fourth of July for the first time since July 4, 1863, when the Siege of Vicksburg ended with a Union victory during the American Civil War." That according to: http://dcpages.com/Tourism/Fourth_of_July/ The Siege of Vicksburg was hard fought, and left a bitter taste in the people's mouths. I understand that the first official celebration of Independence Day came as a result of WWII.
anyway you want to as long as its safe and fun. I usually celebrate it with a huge fireworks display, pool party, and a lot of good food and friends.

The siege of Vicksburg lasted from May 19th up to July 4,1863.
Answer The Battle of Champion's Hill, just east of Vicksburg, was fought on 16 May 1863. This battle was fought out in the open and was a set-back for the Confederates. This forced them to return to the defenses of Vicksburg, which began the siege. The siege ended when General Pemberton surrendered Vicksburg on 3 July.
The Battle for Vicksburg was actually the culmination of the Vicksburg campaign that involved fight and maneuver before the final siege of the city, which itself lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863. The commanders were Major General Grant,U.S.A. vs. Lt. General Pemberton,C.S.A. The operations against Vicksburg actually started in 1862. It was a long, drawn out, bloody affair.
The siege of Vicksburg ended on July 4, 1863. Grant's army arrived in Chattanooga on October 23, 1863. Therefore, it took Grant 2 months, 20 days, or 81 days.
This was a siege battle. Grant against Pemberton May to July 4th 1863. This prolonged siege included several attacks against the Confederated defenses. It also involved several attempts by General Grant to maneuver around the defenses to find a weaker point to attack. Grant sent an army down the Tallahatchie/Yazoo Rivers in order to attack from a different direction but this expedition was stopped at Fort Pemberton(now Greenwood). There were other plans and attempts that were unsuccessful.
Approached it with extreme difficulty from the West bank of the Mississippi. Managed to cross the river downstream unobserved, by distracting the garrison commander, Pemberton, with a cavalry raid. Fought Pemberton in the open country to the East, and drove him back into his lines. Besieged the town and attacked its fortifications - often shouting a warning to Johnny Reb to get his head down! Starved it out, and took the surrender on the Fourth of July, paroling 30,000 prisoners, to the immense gratitude of the town, which actually held a memorial service for Grant when he died - unheard-of in the Deep South. It was a mighty long time before they next celebrated the Fourth of July, however!
The battle occured on May 18 - July 4, 1863. So it lasted 16 days or 2 weeks and 2 days.
The Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi was May 18 through July 4, 1863, or 48 days long.
