Hundreds of years.

The castle has undergone constant change and modification during its lifetime, as parts were destroyed in battle and then replaced, extra parts were added on and extended to create the imposing fortress we see today.

The oldest existing part of the castle is St Margaret's Chapel, which dates from the 1100s. But there have been fortifications on the site since the Iron Age.

The oldest part of the castle that is still intact is St Margaret's chapel which dates back to the 1130s. The first reference to it being a place of fortification is around 600 and the oldest evidence of human habitation there is circa 900bc.
