The castle has undergone constant change and modification during its lifetime, as parts were destroyed in battle and then replaced, extra parts were added on and extended to create the imposing fortress we see today.
The oldest existing part of the castle is St Margaret's Chapel, which dates from the 1100s. But there have been fortifications on the site since the Iron Age.

From what I can gather, there are no records of Goodrich Castle being built. It is dated as late 11th or early 12th century, but we cannot know how long it took to build.
