In direct response to a requirement order from the British Air purchasing Commission in early 1940, plans were underway for the NA-73X in early April 1940. The prototype flew on 26 October 1940 about 150 days later. It showed excellent performance and the RAF ordered 320. All had the Allison F3R engine and were used as tactical recce aircraft. They had 4x.50 and 4x .30 cal machine guns. North American built 2 extra and sent them to the USAAF selection centre as the XP-51. The USAAF then ordered 310 as sent, and a further 500 with the more powerful Allison V-1710 engine.

How long can a World War 2 plane fly for without refueling?

There was a great variation of the range of WWII aircraft. Range of fighter aircraft was the biggest concern, and until the introduction of the p51 Mustang the bomber forces suffered huge losses because because the fighter escorts could not follow them all the way to the targets and back, leaving them vulnerable to German fighters. the range of the mustang allowed an escort to and from the targets, and they were able to inflict huge damages on the Reich.

How long did it take to design the P-51 Mustang fighter plane?

The NA-73X project that was contracted to North American Aviation saw the first prototype of what would become the P-51 Mustang roll out 117 days after the green light. The design would have taken a bit less than that, of course. There is a bit more to this, though. It could be easily argued that a lot of the design came from the Curtiss P-40, as this is, in fact, the case. In comparing the two aircraft, an investigator could not come away with another impression than that much was "transferred" from one design to the other. This shortened the period that might normally have been necessary to come up with an aircraft design, but the new wing on the P-51 was innovative. Use the link below to check facts and learn more about this remarkable aircraft.

How long did it take to put together a fighter aircraft in World War 2?

The length of time to assemble a fighter plane depended on the type of plane, the manufacturing plant and which nation was doing the building. At the beginning of the war, the Brits were turning out 400 fighter planes a month. The US could produce more than that a month but we had more types of fighters and companies. I have included a production graph for you on the web site below. This chart does include all types of planes though. Follow the links and references and you may find fighter plane production figures.
