The length of time to assemble a fighter plane depended on the type of plane, the manufacturing plant and which nation was doing the building. At the beginning of the war, the Brits were turning out 400 fighter planes a month. The US could produce more than that a month but we had more types of fighters and companies. I have included a production graph for you on the web site below. This chart does include all types of planes though. Follow the links and references and you may find fighter plane production figures.

What wars were planes commonly used in?

They can be used in war in many ways. Bombers and attack aircraft can be used to deliver artilary and bombs miles behind the front lines of battle. Observation aircraft can be used to track enemy movements, early warning radar aircraft can report enemy aircraft at miles away, long range fighters can escort our bombers, short range fighter interceptors can intercept enemy bombers, transport helicopters can deliver troops enywhere in a battle field, and tanker aircraft can provide mid air refueling for all these aircraft

Who won most dog fights in World War 1?

The early definition of the word 'dogfight' meant an aerial battle between two or more aircraft. As the First World War broke out not long after the aeroplane had been invented, there had not been time to develop guns which could be built into the body of a plane. The first fighter planes were only equipped with machine-guns which were fixed onto the top wing. These early fighter aircraft had two two seats, with a man sitting in the rear controlling the guns. Dogfights were extremely difficult because the pilot would have to dodge other enemy aircraft while listening to the commands of the gunner as to where to fly to get the enemy into his sights.

Why do you use fighter aircrafts?

Over Germany in 1944, it was all about protecting or shooting down bombers. The U.S. was intent on removing Germany's ability to build more aircraft and destroy it's ability to resupply its troops and machines. Germany found that to be a huge threat and threw fighter aircraft into the air to bring down hundreds upon hundreds of bombers. Not until the P-51 Mustang came along with its long range drop tanks did the bombers finally receive help in staving off attacks from the German fighter planes. Today, fighter aircraft are the fastest, most efficient way to deliver bombs and weapons to countries that need them. Being fast, they get in and back out of the danger zone quickly and only put one or two soldiers (pilots) at risk. However, being high-tech, they are very expensive to acquire, operate, and for training. With its precision weaponry, one fighter aircraft today can do as much damage as it took battleships or battalions of men to accomplish in years past. Operating them from forward air bases or from aircraft carriers mean fighter aircraft can be called up and on station anywhere in the world within a few hours.

How long would it take to travel 125 miles?

It depends on your mode of transport. More than a day if you are walking, less than 5 minutes in a fighter aircraft.

How long can a World War 2 plane fly for without refueling?

There was a great variation of the range of WWII aircraft. Range of fighter aircraft was the biggest concern, and until the introduction of the p51 Mustang the bomber forces suffered huge losses because because the fighter escorts could not follow them all the way to the targets and back, leaving them vulnerable to German fighters. the range of the mustang allowed an escort to and from the targets, and they were able to inflict huge damages on the Reich.

What is the cheapest fighter jet?

There's no simple answer to this. Probably the best value for money in terms of initial expenditure and ongoing operating costs is the F-16 Falcon. It's worth remembering that the initial cost of the aircraft is just one aspect of the long term cost of the plane, with factors like repair, maintenance, training and resupply all having a bearing on cost over the service life of the aircraft. A previous response suggested the cheapest fighter was the BAe Hawk, which is not a fighter but rather a jet trainer with a secondary role as a ground attack aircraft.

How are jet airplanes used today?

Jet aircraft are used in every form of aviation, as transports of cargo or people, as fighter or bomber aircaft, and they particulary excel at long range patrol in naval airforces.

How do you fill aircraft fuel tank in air?

Some military aircraft have the ability to connect to a tanker and have fuel pumped into them. Usually it is done through a long and controllable 'boom' that meets a receptacle in the receiver aircraft. Some other aircraft have 'probes' that the fighter pilot inserts in a towed fuel line ending in a funnel. In both cases the fuel supply line remains shut until the receiver nozzle is locked in .

What is the smallest military aircraft?

The smallest manned combat aircraft that I know about could have been the Russian I-16 "Rat" used early in WW2 and in the Spanish Civil War. It was one of the first planes that Russia built that was an effective fighter aircraft with one wing. It was also the first operational aircraft to have retractable landing gear. In today's modern air forces, there are lots of small drone aircraft(or unmanned) that fire missiles. Most of these are used to hit ground targets. While these planes are smaller and more simple than the fighter jets flown by pilots, some of them are still large aircraft with long wing spans.

How did airplanes make World War 2 different than the other wars?

They were used in massive numbers and played pioneering roles. Aircraft were now functioning with great effect and had created revolutionary designs. Plus, new specific roles were now assigned to aircraft as opposed to simply fighter and bomber in WWI, such as diver-bomber, ground-attack or night-bombers as well as long-range and short-range capabilities.
