King David Kalakaua became the King of Hawaii after winning the throne in a succession crisis following the death of his brother, King Lunalilo, in 1874. Lunalilo had been elected by popular vote, but upon his death, the Hawaiian monarchy faced a choice between Kalakaua and another candidate, Queen Emma. Kalakaua was elected by the legislature, largely due to his supporters' influence and the desire for a strong ruler who could restore the monarchy's power. He was officially crowned in 1883, becoming Hawaii's last king.
