Space shuttles were designed for multiple missions, but they required extensive refurbishment between flights. The average number of flights for a single shuttle was around 25-30 missions. Each shuttle was retired after completing its designated mission count.
Space Shuttle Enterprise did not fly in space, it was only a mock-up used for aerodynamics and gliding tests.
The space shuttle Discovery holds the record for the most flights, with 39 missions between 1984 and 2011. Discovery was the third of NASA's five space shuttles to be built.
NASA has two more shuttle flights planned: STS 134 and STS 135. There have been 133 shuttle flights so far, including STS-133 which concluded on March 09, 2011.
