The Salem witch trials lasted for 5 months and it continued because peoople were afraid that there might be more witchs that could hurt them.
Salem was completly stereotypical witch trial until March 1st when Tituba confessed. Then, the entire county went into panic mode in about a week.
They lasted for a pretty long time but I'm not sure exactly. I do know that alot of innocent people were killed and it was very horrible.

THE US GOVERNMENT was responsible for the Salem Witch Trial executions! As well as anyone in the community ignorant enough to accuse someone of being a Witch! Since there wasn't a Constitution at the time (1690's), a suspected person was brought to trial and if they were so much as left handed (which was considered EVIDENCE one was "of the Devil") they were convicted and sentenced to execution. How sad it was! Needless to say, America has come a long way! EDIT: The people of Salem were not ignorant. They had been raised to believe in the devil and witchcraft as an explanation for what they didn't understand at the time. It's like us of th 21t century saying aliens create crop circles. In Salem, being left-handed was not enough. It wasn't even enough in Europe. Accused witches at the time got a fair trial, perhaps a fairer trial than many today.
The trials themselves lasted 9 months. The hysteria last 16 months.
No, they were just the lastest in the long string of witch hunts in the Christian world over the centuries prior to 1692. In fact, it was one of the smallest.

In the end of the 17th century over 150 citizens were accused, for witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts, arrested and imprisoned. In the following trials that took place in various places 29 persons were convicted and 19 were hanged. One of the places that the trials took place was Salem town and the whole issue became history under the name of "The Salem Witch Trials"Salam Massachusetts
Using witchcraft to cause harm to *very very long list of people*
There were witch trials all over Europe long before Salem was stolen colonized. The burnings of which you hear happened only in Scotland and continental Europe. In England and Ireland, they went with the more 'humane' method of hanging, as they had already had their fun the people had suffered enough. EDIT: The Salem were not even the first in America. That title goes to a the trial of Alyse Young of Windsor, Connecticutt. Margaret Jones, of Boston, was the first tried in Massachusetts.
