The US did not have any standing agreements to aid Poland in the event of an invasion, France and Great Britain did. There was no need for the US to pick a fight with Germany just for the sake of fighting.

You have that backwards. Officially the US fought against Germany first. There were Americans who were RAF bomber pilots but not as part of the United States Army Air Force. It took time to ship servicemen over to Ireland and England in order to begin fighting against Germany.
