In Genesis 15:13, when God made His covenant with Abram, He told him, "You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, and they will be oppressed as slaves for four hundred years." But some scholars believe it was actually 480 years.
Following the Exodus from slavery in Egypt, the Children of Israel traveled a meandering
route through the Sinai peninsula and the desert regions in present-day Jordan, before
they began the conquest and eventual settling of the land west of the Jordan River.
That interval of time spanned 40 years.
The route they followed was not a direct one, but the word "wander" is an inaccurate
and unfortunate mistranslation from the Torah. The book of Exodus states clearly and
repeatedly how the people's stops, starts, and route were guided throughout that period.
There were of course dissenters. But for those willing to follow, there was never any
uncertainty over which direction to travel.

Unknown, but it is an unlikely scenario as Egypt and Israel buried the hatchet long ago. Previously, Egypt and Israel fought several wars, most notably the Yom Kippur War of 1973 when Egypt carried out a brilliant surprise attack on the Israeli-occupied Sinai Peninsula. Israel eventually drove Egypt back but at a very heavy cost. After Egypt and Israel made peace, the Sinai was ceded back to Egypt and the two countries have not fought since.
