The Dutch had colonies and settlements in what now is the US from the mid-16th century to 1664, when they traded their New Netherlands colony (including present-day NY) with the British for Surinam, a sugar- and ore-rich colony near Venezuela.

Technically speaking the Dutch are still present in the Americas: several Caribean islands today have - by free choice of its inhabitants - the status of a Dutch municipality and are part of The Netherlands.
