∙ 13y agoIt is said to have take about 30 years to build the largest of the pyramids. Herodotus recorded that the work force consisted of 400,000 men, who each worked 3 months per year, so 100,000 was working at any given time. Modern historians have suggested the actual number at the site was closer to 10,000.
Pyramids seem to have been built over a period somewhat longer than 800 years. According to the articles sited below, there are 138 of them known, but clearly there may have been some that were lost. Of the pyramids that survive in Egypt, the oldest dates to about 2630 BC, and the most recent to some time after 1830 BC.
The list of pyramids includes one of Ahmose I, who seems to have lived about 1550 BC. It was not a funerary pyramid, and was rather poorly constructed, being built of rubble and faced with limestone. Today, it is just a 10 meter tall mound. Clearly others like this could go unnoticed.
