A dog can remember smells for years. Dogs live in the now. They will remember experiences like if the dog was beaten with a newspaper and you raise a newspaper to hit him with it, the dog will react to it. Mostly a dog will react to smells.

How ever long you can keep track! What criteria measures the time of the attention span? Is it as long as they can play a game, look at something? Chew on something? Do tricks for their people's pleasure? I think that, if you can find an activity that has your dogs full attention and pleasure, his (or her) attention will last for as long as your interaction keeps him enticed!
