Depending on what kind of drugs you are talking about. Hard drugs like cocaine, meth, crack, and heroin dont stay in your system for long. On the other hand Marijuana can stay in your system for up to 28 days(all depending on how heavy of a smoker you are).

Cannabis is up to a month before you're clear.
Ecstacy, about 3 days.
Amphetamines, I'm told about 7-8 days.
This all changes depending on the type of test.
Swab or urine test is the above.
If they test hair, they can tell how many coffees you had each month for each 10mm of hair you have, going back for as long as your hair.

However hair follicle tests are expensive and uncommon. You will probbally be taking a urine test which doesnt show how long you have been using. A urine test only shows if a drug is present in the urine or not.
