I have a female rat called Maritius and shes 4 years old and still going strong. Over that time shes had 3 litters of babies. Pay them lots of attention, give them little treats and make sure they can roam around for an hour or two each day to keep their muscles working. They like chasing things too, like the toys you get for kittens. I think also having them in quite a large cage makes them happier n healthier.
