It is very easy to transplant a tomato plant. Simply dig a hole deep enough to bury the plant past its first leaf stems. If the plant is very long, you can actually lay it down in a trench just a few inches in the the ground and bend up the top of tomato plant just so the last set of leaves are exposed. This method will actually grow a healthier tomato plant as it will have a larger root system. You should fertilize it right after planting and also give it a good drink of water. Do not let it dry out for the first two weeks after transplanting.

wait till the seedlings are about 6 inches high. but more important than height is how warm is the weather, tomayoes don't like cold nights
