Actually it all depends on the size of the pan and amount of batter in the pan. When the cake looks like it is starting to pull away from the sides of the pan and if you take your finger and lightly tap the center of the cake, it should spring back. If it dents and doesn't spring back, it needs more time.
Some bakers like to poke a toothpick in the center of the cake, if it comes out clean, it is done. A typical 8 inch cake pan should take about 25-30 mins. @ 350 degrees.
