For acid etching during the sealant-application procedure, the teeth should be etched with phosphoric acid. It needs to remain on each tooth for a minimum of 15 to 20 seconds.

It depends on the etchant your dentist is using. It can vary, but usually 10-20 seconds...check the manufacturer's instructions.

What is dental etch?

It is a thin substance placed on a prepared tooth before adding a composite filling or a sealant. It's purpose is to make the finishing product stick. :)

What are the long term effects of etching the teeth in preparation for sealant application?

There are no long term effects of etching the teeth before sealant application. The etchant is a strong acid that dissolves the matrix material between the enamel rods that make up the tooth. It is rinsed off within seconds and leaves the tooth with a frosty appearance when dried. The nature of a resin dental sealant is that it requires a mechanical bond with the tooth, this mechanical bond is achieved between the sealant material and the enamel rods. In the case the tooth was "over etched" that is to say the sealant material is not covering the entire etched surface of the tooth, the minerals in the saliva, and topical fluoride rebuild that area of the tooth to make it as sound as it was before the procedure. Can sealants be applied after a fluoride treatment?

In Short, YES. However, placing a sealant requires conditioning a tooth with a mild acid - often called "acid etching". A tooth that has just received a Fluoride treatment may sometimes require a longer etching time in order to allow the sealant to "bond" to the tooth. Also, this tooth will need to be rinsed off prior to bonding the sealant in place.....Thereby washing away some of the fluoride that was just placed. It is usually best to place a sealant at least 30 minutes after a fluoride treatment. In my practice, if we plan to place a sealant the same day as a cleaning and fluoride we have the hygienist clean and polish, then do any sealants needed and then fluoride. Please note that most dentists will replace a sealant that has come off for no additional charge if needed at the next checkup if within 6 months. Albert Internoscia, DMD, FAGD www.familydental.com

What would happen to your teeth if the etchant used on your teeth was not completely washed off before they put on the sealant- please help?

If the etchant is not completely washed off you will still have acid on your tooth and that WILL cause some sensitivity. The sealant should be redone OR the sealant may be too big and you are hitting on that tooth harder than the others.
