To teach within the public school system within the United States, you must have a bachelor's degree in a teacher education program form a regionally accredited college or university and state teacher certification. This would take approximately four years as a full-time student, provided you take the program as prescribed by the college or university.

To become an elementary school teacher, you have to complete a 4-year bachelor's degree program at an accredited college. During that time, you will complete several weeks of student teaching. After you graduate, you will have to take a state test before you can receive your teaching license in most, if not all, states in the United States.

I am a California teacher and it takes 5 years to become a teacher. Before you can teach you have to do student teaching and take a state test. The teaching credential is good for 5 years and in the 5 years you are required to take classes to apply again for another 5 year credential. There isn't one type of credential, but several and it depends on what grades you want to teach as to the credential you get. I have a K-12 life time teaching credential and they don't give these anymore to new teachers.

You will need at least a Bachelor's degree, which is equivalent to about four years of schooling. It can take you shorter or longer depending on how devoted you are. You will probably have to go through other training programs before you are completely qualified.

4 to 5 years (nominally 4, but the student teaching requirements make it difficult to actually finish in 4 because of scheduling conflicts).
