You do not have to go to school to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician. You can take the exam (PTCE - Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) on your own (ptcb.org). All you need to buy is a good study guide. Then once you pass the exam, you just show your State board of Pharmacy your PTCB certification and they will give you your State license (no test). A good resource on becoming a pharmacy tech without going to school is http://cphtonline.com.

Actually, I only had to attend one class that was like 2 1/2 months long and it only prepares you to take the PTCB which is the test you have to take to become a certified pharmacy tech. There are lots of things to remember and its not a breeze but if its what your interested in then go for it!

A pharmacy tech still has to go through 6 years of school, just like anyone else to become a pharmacist. The advantage is that a tech is very familiar with everything and school will be easier than a regular student. I am a pharmacy tech for Publix and also an undergraduate student going for pharmacy. So it is 2 years of undergrad, and 4 more for pharmacy program.
