They are short lived by comparison to a normal goldfish due to the way they have been developed/bred away from the natural shape. A normal goldfish can be expected to live at least 20 years under reasonable conditions. The Bubble eyes, the Moors, Lionheads etc all have much shorter lives of around 10 years.
They have a shorter life span than normal mollies because of the selective breeding (human intervention) used to develop their unnatural balloon shape. You would be doing well to get one to reach 4 years old.
