It depends. Its usually about a year, but you see that the cats health starts to decrease rapidly and sadly there is no cure.. But if it is confirmed that a cat has leukaemia it's best that you have it put to sleep so that it doesn't suffer. Nowadays if you adopt stray cats, people like the RSPCA check them for the 3 main diseases which are leukaemia, aids and another one. Leukaemia is highly contagious to other cats.

Can cats live with feline leukemia?

No. Dogs CANNOT contact feline aids. The only animal that can is another cat. Dogs CANNOT get feline leukemia either.

Your cat has leukemia you believe she is starting to deteriorate what are your options?

Although there is no cure for feline leukemia, there ae drug therapies to help the cat live a longer and healthier life. Below is a link to a site that explains more. If the cat is too far gone, the only humane course would be to end the cats suffering and put it to sleep.

How can you tell if a cat has feline leukemia?

The only way to know for sure is to have your veterinarian run a blood test on your cat to look for the virus; this is an easy test that any veterinarian can run and it takes about 10 minutes to get the results back. However, suspicious symptoms of feline leukemia include recurrent infections like upper respiratory infections that take a long time (more than a week) to resolve, decreased energy and appetite and poor body condition (rough fur, losing weight). The bad part about feline leukemia is the infection itself doesn't manifest in diseases except for some fever at the initial infection. Because of this, you often won't know your cat has feline leukemia until either a routine blood test comes back positive or your cat is very sick. The disease itself is progressive and causes the cat's immune system to slowly stop working; cats with feline leukemia often die of other infections like pneumonia or feline infectious peritonitis. Having said this, feline leukemia is not an immediate death sentence - a 100% indoor cat that doesn't interact with other cats can live a pretty normal life with feline leukemia because you have kept the other infections and pathogens away from him. So long as your cat doesn't get infected with other diseases, the fact that his immune system has all the strength of wet tissue paper won't matter.

Cats with feline leukemia?

Yes, there is such a disease, and it's deadly. What do you want to know? All cats should be vaccinated for it, and any cat who roams outside is quite at risk. When I get a new cat I have it tested for Feline Leukemia before I even bring it home because it can easily spread and I have a cat that cannot be vaccinated due to a bad reaction. Take this disease very seriously.

How many do a cat live?

if you mean how long does a cat live, this depends on its health, some breeds can live as long as 20-23 years , if a cat goes outside this can take 5 to 7 years off its life span, a cat that only stays indoors or in an enclosed area can live much longer.
