Tough question. With dogs, the treatment options that humans benefit from just aren't there. Lung cancer in dogs is usually fatal. That it usually occurs in older dogs is a good thing in that their normal life expectancy may exhaust before mortality from cancer sets in Cancer treatments for your dog are often extremely expensive. Surgery is one potentially viable option, as is chemotherapy. There is always a chance that the dog may survive from the therapy, but it's not at all certain. More to the point (for me anyway), the dog's qualitiy of life declines during therapy, no matter how diligent you are in your treatment. Without knowing the type of malignancy, it's impossible to speculate on the amount of time left. I would estimate roughly 2 years max, although full remission is (rarely) obtained, and more aggressive malignancies won't give you two years. This is a good time to look at your bank account, and have a long, serious talk with your Vet, and make a treatment plan that includes changes based on progress. The focus should be quality of life for the dog. Were it my animal, I'd focus on giving it a try, but making the rest of my dog's life as pleasant, fun and exicting for the dog as possible. One last comment. In researching this, I noticed quite a few websites promising miracle cures (usually for about $59.95 US). Even for humans, there is no miracle cure. I wish there was but it's not so. Please don't get your hopes raised and your money wasted by indulging in one of these unpleasant farces. It would depend on the type of cancer, the diet and what has been done recently. Our dog was recently diagnosed with Liposarcoma - they say she MIGHT make it 3 months because of the biopsy (encourages cancer to grow quicker) and the nature of that type of cancer. However, we have detoxed her, boosted her immune system and given her herbs that work on cancers. The vet was amazed how much her tumor has shrunk. Also a raw diet is essential. The crap they put in commercial dog food is very bad for them. I would recommend a holistic vet, find a local herbalist AND research on the internet. I see some sites selling stuff for cancer for dogs for outrageous prices when you can make it yourself for so much cheaper. Please don't put the poor dog through chemo. That might give her a little more time (opposed to doing nothing) but will make her quality of life terrible with the same result in the end. Many cancers can be cured with the right herbs and diet. Give it a shot - you have nothing to lose but your best friend. Also, we saw our dogs tumor double in size after having her shots. You can have her blood drawn and sent somewhere in tx to check titer levels (to tell them her shots are still working - rabies shots frequently last 7-10 yrs yet they make us give them every 1-3 yrs!
