About 15 hours a day is about the average answer. Although to keep with the natural cycle of life, I try to keep the winter hours down to about 10 or so. A few hours of artificial light in the mornings and evenings with whatever is available during the day. I don't get as many eggs this way, but I'm hoping that the ladies will last longer without the stress of having to produce every day.

14 hours per day is optimum for egg production. Many battery farms leave lights on 24 hours.

It will take a laying hen twenty-one days to hatch her eggs. The wait time begins after she has finished laying the eggs in that clutch, not when the first egg is laid.

How many eggs can a New Hampshire red hen lay each day?

Depends on the age of the hen. Hens begin laying at around six months of age and can continue for 5-10 years, with peak production occurring in the first 2 years. They will lay roughly 6 eggs each week. Egg production drops each year when the hens molt (replace their feathers in the early fall) and as daylight hours are lost. Hens need at least 12- 14 hours of light each day to continue laying eggs. A regular light bulb is sufficient to supply this light.

Do chickens lay year round?

Yes, they do -- if the number of light hours is enough. Place lights in the hen house to elongate the laying season of hens. They will lay less often in the winter. Of course, in the northern areas hens will not lay many eggs in the winter unless artificial light is provided, as the number of light hours is greatly decreased. We live in the Deep South, and our one lone chicken is still laying eggs in December/January, but not as frequently as she did during the summer.

Ho many laying hens do some U.S farms have?

Some farms have 1.5 to 2 million laying hens, producing about 400 million eggs a year. The number of farms with 1 million or more hens, or layers, has increased in the 1990s.

How many eggs do four hens lay a day?

Four hens have the potential to lay four eggs but this is not always the case. Old hens will eventually stop laying eggs, sick hens may not lay any eggs and hens even in prime condition may be molting or may just be a slow laying breed. There are many reasons why four hens may not even lay one egg in a single day.

How many eggs do warren hens lay?

Warren hens are known for laying large brown eggs. These hens lay an average of 4 eggs each week. After a full two years of laying the amount of eggs that the hen produces will be reduced.

Why do hens stop laying?

Hens will either stop laying due to old age, or decreasing sunlight. To keep them laying during winter you have to provide artificial light for them so they think it gets darker at the usual summer time.

Why do chickens stop laying eggs in the summer?

Chickens have laying seaons. When they come to an end of the laying season, they don't lay for 2-3 weeks, and then they begin a new egg season. Stress, bad food, and cold or hot weather can cause hens to stop laying until their envionment/conditions improve. A chicken won't lay if she's sick or distressed; her energy will go to keeping her alive instead of producing eggs.

How many chickens per laying box?

In some flocks as many as 10 hens or more will use a single laying box or nest. Depending on the size of the box it is not uncommon to see two birds nesting at the same time otherwise they will wait their turn and deposit an egg right after the box is vacated.

How many eggs will sixty hens lay in four weeks?

You want your hens are to the age of laying eggs (which is about 6 months), and your hens are under the age of three years (because when they reach this age, they are past their prime, and lay less eggs). Expect from your hens that every day 80% of the number of hens will be your number of eggs. So with this math, if you have 60 hens that are all in their prime, you can expect to get about 1344 eggs in four weeks.

How many egg laying hens are on a farm?

I can only answer from my point of view. I keep 20 laying hens at any one time. Bob down the road has 40 and Jeff his neighbor keeps 6. I know this is very specific information so if this does not answer your question, perhaps joining a local 4H club might help.
