27.5 days is given as the (sidereal) orbital period of the moon, but this is slightly different from the moon's synodic period. A full lunar cycle takes one synodic period to complete.

29.531 days is the synodic cycle of the moon, what we call the lunar cycle. This is the length of time it takes for exactly one entire cycle of lunar phases to occur. A synodic orbit or period is the length of time it takes for a body to orbit a planet bringing the body into the same alignment with the sun, relative to the planet. New moons, for example, are separated by 29.531 days, the synodic period. Because the earth is moving in its anti-clockwise orbit, the moon has to orbit a little more than 360 degrees in order to align with the sun again.
