It depends on the method. It can takes seconds to minutes to years. Years you say? Yes, years. If you survive a drug overdose you can be living with damaged organs for years before it kills you. If you survive hanging, shooting, or other methods, you can also be living with defects from that for years.

It depends on how it effects them. Some people will not seek medical treatment & maybe never get better, but that doesn't mean they will die & by this you mean kill themselves, right? Some may commit suicide early on. I'm sure it is also possible to die from severe symptoms like drastic weight loss or something of that sort. It effect people very individually.

Further to the above. 'Depression' is a word that describes states of mind such as 'feeling down', 'feeling low', 'not feeling right with the world' and so on. Most people can feel this way when things don't go their way or after they lose a friend, relationship, job, and so on.

Depression becomes lethal - i.e. so dangerous that the depressed person is at risk of being dead in the near future - when the person begins to believe that their psychological pain or angst is unbearable. Yet humans have devised all sorts of ways of putting up with pain. Pain killers or analgesics, psychotherapy, activities that move the mind / pain centres away from pain towards pleasure, etc.

The answer to your question is that 'depression' - on its own - never killed anyone. Using inappropriate ways to ease the pain of depression, that's what causes some unfortunate people to act against themselves such that they may ultimately lose their lives while trying to 'kill' the pain.

Edwin S. Shneidman is the writer who is best on all of this. I recommend anything written by Edwin.

Depression need not be deadly. Many individuals with depression receive appropriate treatment and go on to have long, productive lives.
