Hydrocodone exhibits a complex pattern of metabolism including O-demethylation, N-demethylation and 6-keto reduction to the corresponding 6-(alpha)- and 6-(beta)-hydroxymetabolites. One metabolite, hydromorphone, can be detected by tests that only check for hydrocodone specifically. These are usually at-home tests. If the results are sent off to a lab though, it is likely the lab will only test for morphine and send back a negative. Many opiate tests look only for morphine because it is the major metabolite of heroin and codeine.

The above is very true, most drug tests try to cover all mu-opioid agonist drugs under one category. This is not a very effective way of testing considering how many of these drugs do not contain morphine as a metabolite.
