Loke the sun shing through a crystal pendant or prism refracts and reflects making a rainbow effect. If you take the crystal out of the sun , the rainbows go away. When the sun hides behind a cloud, the rainbow fades and then goes away as it needs the sun to make a rainbow. Usually rainbows only last a few minutes because the clouds and the moisture and the sun must be in just the right place for us to see them.
