This varies not only from person to person, but school to school. I attend DeVry University online, once I have a credit balance (meaning they owe me money in excess of what was paid for tuition etc) in my account they legally have 14 "business" days to send out the refund. Note business days are Monday-Friday, so this is nearly 3 weeks. Most of the time I have noticed that they generally try to get it out sooner and the longest I've had to wait for a refund was about 7 days. But as I stated, they legally have 14 "business days" in which to refund any money due to you.
If you have school grants, that means you have been given money for school, or been directly funded for school. And that means that you have not paid for the school - someone else has. Grant and scholarship funds are specifically excluded from any education credits or deductions for exactly that reason. So, no, you cannot get a refund based on school grants.
You can, but if you get a refund from the school your attending based on State Laws it may be taken as part of payment to reduce the debt. (i.e child support etc.)
YesNO THEY CAN'T, SUPERTACO ~If your school debt has been sent to their collections department they can and sometimes will take your state refund. They don't usually take your federal though. A school can't take your return...but if as some here before, you are confused by the difference, and you have a loan (maybe arranged through the school), that is guranteed or insured under a federal program, then the IRS can and does send refunds to the lender.
