There are some waste products that take a very long time to decompose in a landfill. Thus, they should be recycled, instead of simply thrown away. For example, an aluminum can takes around 100 years to decompose.

Unlike some other metals, such as iron, aluminum has a resistance to oxidation. However, purified aluminum (cans, foil) will slowly and eventually be dissolved by the actions of other chemicals. It is preferable that it be recycled, however, because it is easier and cheaper to reuse elemental aluminum than to separate it from bauxite ore.

When tossed out of a car, it will not decompose within your lifetime naturally, so don't do that!

Thick metals like iron, will not decompose, but will eventually break apart. Flimsy metals such as aluminum would decompose after about 200-500 years.
