There are a number of specific fire ant killers on the market, however most are hazzardous to the environment and can be toxic to people and animals so they should be used with care and the directions should be followed CAREFULLY! I've read, and I'm now trying Borax (can be found in the detergent isle of your local grocer. Usually in a Green & Yellow box with Red lettering (Mule Team Borax). It has many household uses, including a detergent boosting agent for laundry. However, it has a long history of getting rid of ants. I used it successfully for Carpenter Ants in Ohio ... I've just put it out to see if it will work on Fire Ants. I have a nasty infestation in my back yard and get bitten frequently. Their bites normally leave a small welt that will sting and itch for weeks. You can mix the borax with moist cat food (you MUST cover this and only leave a hole small enough for the ants to get in... because Racoons and neighborhood cats will also be attracted to it. ) Best to only have it out during the times you are home and can watch it, also during the day and not at night since most ants will bed down for the night and that is the main time for Racoons, Cats etc to roam. You can also sprinkle the borax in your yard and around the perimeter of your home, just remember to reapply after it rains.
