That depends on what you call 'long' or 'short'. Halley's period is in the neighborhood of 75 years, give or take a few years. Since that's short enough for two perihelions to occur within a single human lifetime, I guess it ought to be considered a short period.
There are several dozen known periodic comets, and we have observed many long-period comets as well. New ones are discovered every year. In fact, a new comet was discovered last fall, and should be nicely visible in the spring. If you are referring to Halley's Comet, it was last seen in 1910 and then in 1986, and is expected to be back around in 2061 or so. However, observations of Halley's Comet go back to the 3rd century BC. Check the Related Links below for more info.
A comet with a period of 200 years or more.
Comet is derived from 'cometes' which is a Latin word. This in turn has been derived from 'Kometes' which is Greek for 'long haired'. This also means stars with hair according to Aristotle's derivation.
During a comet's orbit, the coma and tails are the parts that come and go. The coma is the glowing, fuzzy cloud around the nucleus that develops as the comet gets closer to the Sun. The tails, consisting of ion and dust tails, form as a result of solar radiation and solar wind pushing the coma's particles away from the nucleus. Both the coma and tails diminish as the comet moves away from the Sun during its orbit.

Comet Hale-Bopp orbits the Sun. It is a very long-period comet; we expect it back in about 2200 years. Perhaps before then we'll go out and get it.
