This depends on the material the net is made from. A nylon net can last indefinitely while a natural fiber rope will eventually decompose. Decomposition will depend on water temperature and organisms in the water.

It depends on what the line is made from, how much exposure to strong daylight it has, the warmth of the water and several other factors. If it's monofilament, it's made from extruded plastic and can last for several hundred years. Exposure to the ultraviolet portion of regular daylight will speed up the decay process.

If the line is coated with a UV inhibitor, its' life can be extended. Similarly, the superlines are made of Kevlar and will break down faster in the presence of heat, which is the enemy of all plastic lines.

Dacron, an older style of line, made from artificial fibers, is also likely to take several hundred years to break down.

Calcutta line, which was popular 70 years ago, is made of linen and will rot if kept wet.

When possible, all fishing line should be recycled, if possible, or landfilled, if no recycling facilities are available.
