Seconds! They may spend a good amount of time inspecting the new shell before getting in, though.
Never, they hide in their shells until their skin is hard.
3-6 months
Hermit crabs can. It happens when the hermit crab is changing its shell and falls over or when the hermit crab is dead it slides out or falls out of its shell! Sadly they can't always get back in there shells and die.
Hermit crabs excrete their waste by going in their shells and scooping it out, usually in their water bowls, no matter how many times you change the water the hermit crabs will still scoop it out in the water. Hermit crabs make so little liquid that you will never find it.
yes they do becuse if they dont the part that goes in the shell is very tender and soft and can get dameged very easy so its good to have difernt sized empty shells in the cage so the crab can change the shells when needed
Small fish, plankton, and other hermit crabs
In captivity, they live 1-2 years.
Hermit Crab, a land- or water-dwelling crustacean. Unlike true crabs, hermit crabs have soft, vulnerable abdomens. For protection from predators, many hermit crabs seek out abandoned shells, usually snail shells. When a hermit crab finds one of the proper size, it pulls itself inside, leaving several legs and its head outside the shell. (A hermit crab has five pairs of legs, but not all of them are fully developed.) A hermit crab carries the shell wherever it goes. When it outgrows its shell, it switches to a larger one. Most adult hermit crabs are from 1/2 inch (13 mm) to 4 3/4 inches (121 mm) long. Living on the seashore, in tidepools, and on the sea bottom in deeper water, hermit crabs scavenge their food.
No, they cannot get stuck (at least not for long). Hermit crabs will normally move out of a shell long before it gets uncomfortably tight, because with smaller shells they become more exposed to predators.
A hermit crabs abdoman is long and soft. They insert it into the shell, and wrap it around the inside. They can change out of it any time they want.
If you have a hermit crab, we used to feed them dog food just break the pellets up into smaller sizes the hermit crabs do not eat much so watch the dog food for mold, just 2 nuggets will last a long time, the hard part is getting larger shells for the hermit crabs.
